The '55 Vapid Stanier: The Pre-Order Car and Its Garage

The '55 Vapid Stanier is the centrepiece of the Vintage Vice City Pack, the bonus content attached to both GTA VI editions when pre-ordered. It is the only vehicle Rockstar has described as arriving with somewhere to keep it.

What is in the pack

Vapid, and the model year

Vapid is Grand Theft Auto's Ford analogue and one of the series' most-used marques. The Stanier nameplate has appeared since GTA IV, usually as an unremarkable saloon; a 1955 version is a different proposition entirely.

The design in the screenshots - wraparound windscreen, chrome tail fins, two-tone paint split along a side spear, wide whitewall-adjacent tyres - is mid-fifties American full-size. Rockstar has now named three vehicles by model year: a '55 Stanier, a '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and a '95 Grotti Cheetah.

Naming model years at all is new. Previous GTA games rarely dated their vehicles explicitly, and doing so here suggests the fleet spans eras deliberately rather than being uniformly contemporary.

The pack's period framing

Everything in the Vintage Vice City Pack points backwards. The car is fifties, the outfits and hairstyles in the images are seventies, and Rockstar's own line is "flash back to when the neon burned brightest".

This is worth reading carefully, because it has generated a persistent misunderstanding. GTA VI is set in the present - Rockstar's Vice City copy opens "we're a long way from the '80s". The pack is nostalgic cosmetics inside a modern-day game, not a period mode.

How it compares as a pre-order bonus

Measured against the genre, this is a substantial pre-order pack - a vehicle, storage, two characters' worth of clothing and hair, and a weapon skin. Measured against how long a GTA campaign runs, it is still cosmetic.

• None of it is story content, mission content or map area.
• The garage is the only functional item, and its function is storage.
• It is identical across Standard and Ultimate, so it is not a reason to choose one edition over the other.
• It is a pre-order bonus, so its post-launch availability is unstated.

That last point is the only genuinely time-sensitive thing about it. Rockstar has not said whether the pack becomes purchasable later, which is the standard reason pre-order bonuses have any urgency at all.

What is still unknown

• Whether the Vintage Vice City Pack will be sold separately after launch.
• How large the Ocean Beach garage is, or how many vehicles it holds.
• Whether the garage functions like the Paradise Garage, which Rockstar describes as having a weapon locker and fencing.
• Whether the Stanier is available in the base game in another form.
• Whether the weapon pattern applies to one weapon or several.

What a garage implies that a car does not

Every other item in the Vintage Vice City Pack is appearance. The garage is infrastructure, and it is the only piece of property Rockstar has said any player receives.

Five unanswered questions about a single bullet point. The garage is the most functionally significant thing in either bonus package and the least described.

The Stanier as a series nameplate

The Stanier has been Grand Theft Auto's ordinary sedan since GTA IV - the car that fills traffic, gets used as a taxi and never gets a second look. Turning it into a 1955 two-tone showpiece is a deliberate inversion.

• In GTA IV it was a Ford Crown Victoria analogue, common and unremarkable.
• In GTA V it appeared in civilian and police variants.
• A '55 version places it in the Fairlane and Crown Victoria era, which is where the nameplate's real-world reference actually starts.
• It is the only pre-order vehicle, which means it is the car most GTA VI players will own from the first hour.

That last point is easy to overlook. If pre-order rates are anything like the forecasts suggest, the '55 Stanier will be one of the most-driven vehicles in the game simply because most players start with it.

Ocean Beach, and why the location was chosen

Rockstar places the garage "alongside the world-famous Ocean Beach", which is the same neighbourhood the studio describes as "pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands" in its Vice City overview.
