What Console Do You Need for GTA 6?
Current-gen only, no last-gen version, and no announced PS5 Pro mode. What you actually need, and what nobody has confirmed.

GTA VI runs on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the whole list. There is no PlayStation 4 version, no Xbox One version, no announced Nintendo platform, and no PC release. If you are on last-generation hardware, an upgrade is required rather than optional.
| Platform | Supported |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | Yes - no enhanced mode announced |
| Xbox Series X | Yes |
| Xbox Series S | Yes |
| PlayStation 4 | No |
| Xbox One | No |
| PC | Not announced |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Not announced |

Why there is no last-gen version
Rockstar has not published a technical justification, but the trailers make the case implicitly. The crowd and traffic density shown in the Ocean Beach material is well beyond what GTA V attempted, and pedestrian count is one of the hardest things to scale down - you cannot reduce it far without changing what the city is. Combined with a state-scale map, a last-gen build would be a different game rather than a lower setting.
This is a break from Rockstar's pattern. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on the outgoing generation. GTA VI skipping last-gen entirely is a first for a mainline release.
Xbox Series S
The Series S is confirmed supported, which answers the most common question about it. What Rockstar has not published is how the game differs there - resolution, framerate, texture quality, or crowd density are all unaddressed. Series S has less memory and a weaker GPU than Series X, so differences will exist; their scale is unknown.
PS5 Pro
The game runs on PS5 Pro because it runs on PS5. Rockstar has announced no Pro-specific enhancement - no higher resolution mode, no framerate target, nothing. That silence is worth respecting rather than filling in: buying a Pro specifically for GTA VI means buying against an unannounced feature.
Articles listing GTA VI's PS5 Pro resolution or framerate modes are fabricating them. Rockstar has published no performance-mode information for any hardware.
Storage
No install size has been announced. For planning purposes: Red Dead Redemption 2 was roughly 150GB and GTA V with GTA Online exceeded 100GB, both on older hardware with less demanding assets. Expecting something substantial is reasonable; quoting a number is not. If your console is near capacity, clearing space before November is sensible regardless.
- Install size - not announced.
- Whether an external drive can run it - unannounced, though current-gen titles generally require internal SSD storage on PS5.
- Day-one patch size - not announced.
What has and has not been said about performance
Rockstar has made exactly one technical statement about GTA VI, and it is not about performance. Everything else in this area is unpublished.
| Detail | Status |
|---|---|
| Trailer 2 captured in-game on PS5 | Stated - the only technical claim |
| Frame rate target | Never stated |
| Resolution target | Never stated |
| Fidelity and performance modes | Never mentioned |
| Ray tracing | Never mentioned |
| PS5 Pro enhancements | Never mentioned |
| Xbox Series S differences | Never mentioned |
| Variable refresh rate support | Never mentioned |
Any article quoting a GTA 6 frame rate or resolution is inventing it. The capture disclosure says the footage came from a running PS5 build; it says nothing about how fast it ran.
The Series S question
The Xbox Series S is meaningfully less capable than the Series X and has roughly 364GB of usable storage. Rockstar has said nothing about how GTA VI runs on it or how large the install is.
- Developers have generally targeted lower resolutions on Series S rather than cutting content.
- Microsoft requires feature parity, so the game cannot omit modes for that console.
- Storage is the more pressing practical concern for Series S owners than performance.
- Nothing about a reduced-size install for Series S has been announced.
The useful preparation for a Series S owner is space rather than expectation management. That decision has to be made before pre-load opens, not after.
No. Rockstar has confirmed current-generation only and has not hinted at a last-gen version.
It is supported. How the experience differs from Series X has not been published.
Not on the basis of GTA VI specifically - no Pro enhancements have been announced.
No official figure exists. Given the scale, planning for a large install is sensible, but any specific number you see is invented.
Not for single-player. Since no online mode is announced for launch, there is currently nothing requiring a subscription.
