Rockstar's Screenshot Drop: What ~100 Official Images Actually Reveal

Six named regions, eight named characters, and a media kit anyone can download. What the official press assets confirm about Leonida - and what they quietly avoid showing.

Alongside the refreshed Grand Theft Auto VI website, Rockstar has published a large body of official screenshots and artwork through a public media kit. Coverage counted 63 new screenshots in the largest single batch; the full download library, including artwork, wallpapers and edition content, runs closer to a hundred assets.

That matters more than it sounds. These are the only images of GTA VI that are unambiguously real, unambiguously current, and unambiguously not upscaled or recompressed by someone in between. Every genuine debate about what this game looks like should be conducted using these files.

The library is browsable and downloadable at rockstargames.com/VI under the media and downloads sections. Every image on this site comes from there - which is also why our captions describe what is in the frame rather than what we would like it to imply.

The six regions Rockstar has named

The screenshots are organised by location, and the organisation is itself the confirmation. Rockstar grouping images under a place name is the studio naming that place, which is a considerably stronger signal than a map leak or a background sign someone read off a trailer frame.

LocationWhat the screenshots show
Vice CityDense beachfront and downtown, nightlife, arena district, murals and overpasses
Leonida KeysCauseways, shallow reefs, a waterfront bar, sandbar boat parties
Port GellhornRoadside motels, cabaret strips, industrial and residential edges
Mount Kalaga National ParkCanyon highway, pine forest, rivers, black bears, hunting
GrassriversWetlands, airboats, stilt-house communities, alligators
AmbrosiaRural two-lane roads, biker culture, marshland at dusk

The eight characters with their own sets

Character sets are the other organising axis, and Rockstar giving someone a folder of four to six press shots is a strong statement of narrative importance. Two protagonists and six supporting figures currently have one.

What the set quietly avoids

The absences are as informative as the contents, and they are consistent enough to look deliberate. Across roughly a hundred official images, there is no user interface, no minimap, no weapon wheel, no mission prompt and no HUD of any kind.

  • No HUD or UI elements in any published frame.
  • No menus, inventory screens, character-switch interfaces or map screens.
  • No wanted-level indicator, despite several frames showing police.
  • No on-screen prompts that would reveal control schemes or platform.
  • No frames labelled by mission or chapter, which would leak story structure.

A screenshot with no HUD tells you what the world looks like. It tells you nothing about how the game plays. Anyone reading mechanics out of these images - inventory limits, weapon counts, mission design - is inventing them.

Reading them honestly

The reasonable inferences from a press screenshot are narrow: this place exists, this character exists, this activity is depicted, this time of day and weather are rendered. Rockstar chose these frames and composed them, so they represent the game at its most photogenic rather than at its average.

Why Rockstar releases these at all

A public media kit is partly generosity and mostly control. Publishing high-resolution originals means that every article, video thumbnail and wiki page uses Rockstar's chosen framing at Rockstar's chosen quality, rather than a screengrab from a compressed trailer re-encode.

It also has a practical anti-leak function. When official 4K assets are freely available, fabricated 'leaked screenshots' have to compete with them on quality - and they generally cannot.

What is still missing from the library

For all its size, the press library has visible gaps, and they line up with what Rockstar has not yet chosen to talk about.

  • No interior shots of player-owned property beyond Ultimate Edition content.
  • No frames showing both protagonists together in gameplay rather than key art.
  • No images of any customisation system - vehicles, weapons or characters - outside edition bundles.
  • Nothing depicting multiplayer, matchmaking or any social feature.
  • No shots of Vice City's interior spaces at the density the exteriors imply.

Frame counts as a signal

Counting how many frames each subject receives is a crude measure and a surprisingly informative one. Press sets are assembled deliberately, with a fixed budget of attention, and what gets the most frames is what the studio most wants associated with the game.

SubjectApprox. framesReading
Vice City9The headline location, as expected
Mount Kalaga National Park6Unexpectedly heavy - wilderness is being sold hard
Leonida Keys5A full region rather than a set-piece island
Port Gellhorn5A second urban centre, not a small town
Ambrosia5Rural culture with its own identity
Grassrivers4Wetlands as a traversal space, not scenery
Jason and Lucia6 eachEqual weight - neither is the lead
Each supporting character4Uniform allocation, deliberately non-hierarchical

Two things stand out. Kalaga getting as many frames as it does suggests the northern wilderness is a genuine region rather than a border, which is a meaningful correction to the assumption that this is a Vice City game with countryside attached. And the strictly equal allocation between Jason and Lucia is the clearest statement Rockstar has made that neither is the protagonist and the other the sidekick.

What the file metadata does and does not tell you

The published assets are 3840×2160 JPEGs. People read a great deal into that and most of it is unwarranted, so it is worth stating plainly what a resolution establishes.

  • 4K output means the source render was at least 4K. It says nothing about the framerate that render was produced at.
  • Screenshots are frequently captured with a debug camera in a paused world, at settings no player will use.
  • JPEG compression artefacts in the published files are a delivery decision, not a rendering one.
  • The absence of a HUD is a compositing decision, not evidence that the game has no HUD.
  • Consistent colour grading across the set indicates post-processing applied in-engine, which is normal and not deceptive.

The specific claim 'these screenshots prove GTA 6 runs at 4K on PS5' is not supported. A screenshot is one frame with unlimited time to render it. Only sustained footage with a capture disclosure speaks to real-time performance.

Using the media kit yourself

The library is genuinely public, and using it directly is the single easiest way to avoid being misled by recompressed reposts. If you write about this game, run a wiki, or just want wallpapers, going to the source costs nothing.

  1. Browse the media and downloads sections on the official GTA VI site rather than an aggregator.
  2. Download the original file rather than screenshotting the page - the difference in a dark night scene is dramatic.
  3. Note the filename. Rockstar's naming convention identifies the subject, which makes attribution trivial.
  4. Check whether an image is a screenshot or artwork before drawing conclusions from it - the wallpapers are illustrations, not renders.
  5. Credit Rockstar Games. The assets are published for use; they are not public domain.

How the set compares to Red Dead Redemption 2's

Rockstar ran a comparable press campaign before Red Dead Redemption 2, and the differences are informative. That set leaned heavily on landscape and atmosphere, with characters presented largely in-world rather than in portrait framing.

GTA VI's set inverts the ratio. Roughly half the images are character-led, most of those are shot like promotional stills for a television ensemble, and the supporting cast receives near-equal billing with the protagonists. Whatever else that indicates, it is a deliberate statement that this game is being sold on its people rather than its place.

How many official GTA 6 screenshots are there?

The largest single batch was counted at 63 new screenshots. Including artwork, wallpapers and edition content, the full downloadable library runs close to a hundred assets.

Can I download them?

Yes. Rockstar publishes them publicly under the media and downloads sections of the official GTA VI site.

Are they in-engine?

Rockstar stated that Trailer 2's footage was captured entirely in-game on PS5. The studio has not attached an equivalent statement to every individual screenshot.

Do the screenshots confirm the map size?

No. Stills establish that a place exists and what it looks like; they cannot establish scale or travel distance.

Why is there no HUD in any of them?

Rockstar composes press screenshots without interface elements as a matter of course. It keeps the images usable as artwork and avoids committing to a UI that may still be changing.
