Grassrivers: The Wetlands Between Everything Else
Airboats, alligators, stilt houses and a helicopter pursuit across flooded marsh. The region whose name is a direct nod to how the Everglades were christened.

Grassrivers is Leonida's wetland interior, and its name is the most transparent reference on the map. Marjory Stoneman Douglas titled her 1947 book about the Everglades The Everglades: River of Grass, and the phrase has defined how Florida describes that landscape ever since. Rockstar simply pluralised it.
| Detail | Status |
|---|---|
| Named by Rockstar | Yes |
| Official frames published | Four |
| Real-world analogue | The Everglades — heavily implied by the name |
| Primary traversal shown | Airboats |
| Wildlife shown | Alligators |
| Settlement type shown | Stilt houses over water |
| Size or boundaries | Never stated |
You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse. The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves.
Rockstar calls the region "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown", and the phrase about deadlier predators and weirder discoveries is the closest the studio has come to promising that something is hidden out there. It is deliberately unspecific, and it is still a promise.
The four frames
- Men lounging on an airboat surrounded by alligators at what reads as a swamp attraction.
- A stilt-house community built out over the water, with the Vice City skyline faint on the horizon.
- An overhead view of a lone airboat crossing dark water between mats of weed.
- A helicopter and several airboats converging across flooded marshland in pursuit.
The second one is the most informative image in the entire regional set, for a reason that has nothing to do with the houses. The Vice City skyline is visible on the horizon. That is Rockstar telling you, in a single frame, that these two regions are close enough to see each other across.

What the skyline sightline tells you
Fan maps have placed Grassrivers at wildly different distances from Vice City. A visible skyline across open water constrains that considerably — not to a number, but to an order of magnitude.
| Inference | Strength |
|---|---|
| Grassrivers borders or nearly borders Vice City | Strong — the skyline is visible |
| The two are separated by water rather than by land | Moderate — the frame is shot across open water |
| A specific distance can be derived | None — render distance is not a measurement |
| The wetlands wrap around the city | No evidence either way |
Do not convert a visible skyline into a distance. Game render distances are art directions, not survey data, and studios routinely make a skyline visible from further than it would be in reality because it looks better.
Airboats, and the traversal question
Airboats appear in three of the four frames, which is the heaviest concentration of a single vehicle type in any region's press set. In one of them they are being used in what is plainly a chase, alongside a helicopter.
That is strong circumstantial evidence that airboats are player-usable, and it is still circumstantial. Rockstar has confirmed no vehicle list. What the frames do establish is that the region is designed around water traversal — a marsh you cannot drive a car through needs another answer, and Rockstar has photographed one repeatedly.

The stilt houses are unusually specific
A community of houses built on pilings over open water is a real Florida form — Stiltsville in Biscayne Bay is the obvious reference — and it is a strange thing to model unless it is going somewhere.
Buildings over water impose real technical cost: reflections, water interaction, unusual approach angles, and traversal that is neither swimming nor driving. Studios do not absorb that cost for background geometry. This is inference rather than confirmation, but it is the sort of inference worth making.
What we still do not know
- Whether airboats are player-controllable.
- Whether the stilt houses are enterable or ownable.
- Whether alligators are hazards, wildlife, or scenery.
- How large the wetland region is.
- Whether the pursuit frame depicts a mission or a staged press composition.
- Whether there are roads through Grassrivers at all.
The name is a direct citation
Marjory Stoneman Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass in 1947, and the phrase changed how Florida understood the landscape - from worthless swamp to a slow-moving river of freshwater. It is one of the most consequential book titles in American conservation.
Rockstar named a region Grassrivers. That is not a coincidence, and it is the clearest example of a GTA VI place name carrying a real reference rather than a pun.
This matters beyond trivia. A studio that reaches for a 1947 conservation text for a region name has thought about what the place is, which raises the odds that the environment is doing something rather than filling space between cities.
'Far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries'
Rockstar's regional copy ends on a deliberately unresolved note, and it is the only place in any of the six descriptions where the studio promises something without naming it.
| Reading | What would support it |
|---|---|
| Animals more dangerous than alligators | Consistent with a wildlife system; nothing shown supports a specific species |
| People - smugglers, hermits, gangs | Consistent with how Rockstar characterises other regions by population |
| Easter eggs and hidden locations | 'Weirder discoveries' fits this reading better than the predator clause does |
| A story location | Nothing in the published material connects Grassrivers to the plot |
The phrase is doing two jobs in one sentence - one about danger, one about strangeness. GTA has a long history of burying oddities in its least-visited terrain, and a wetland is exactly where a studio would put them.
Why wetlands are technically expensive
This region is the most demanding environment in the published material, and it is worth understanding why Rockstar would build it anyway.
- Shallow water needs its own rendering treatment - it is neither ocean nor ground, and it has to react to vehicles crossing it.
- Dense vegetation over water means foliage rendering plus water simulation plus their interaction, all at once.
- Airboats need a bespoke physics model, since nothing else in the game moves across water on a flat hull driven by air.
- Structures on pilings require unusual collision and approach handling.
- Wildlife in a wetland needs to swim, wade and haul out, which is three behaviour sets per species.
That is a substantial engineering commitment for one region. Studios absorb costs like that when the space is meant to be used, which is the strongest available argument that Grassrivers is more than scenery.
What the pursuit screenshot might be
One of the four frames shows a helicopter and several airboats converging across flooded marsh. It is the only image in the entire regional press set that depicts an action sequence rather than a place.
| Reading | Assessment |
|---|---|
| A scripted story mission | Plausible - the composition is unusually staged |
| An emergent police pursuit | Plausible - Rockstar has shown marine police elsewhere |
| A press composition assembled for the shot | Likely to some degree; all press screenshots are composed |
| Evidence airboats are player-drivable | Suggestive, not confirmed |
Rockstar separately described a Squalo screenshot as showing "a police boat close by and a police helicopter overhead", which establishes that marine and air pursuit exist as a pairing. The Grassrivers frame is consistent with the same system in a different environment.
It is clearly modelled on them, and the name references how the Everglades have been described since 1947. Rockstar has not stated a real-world analogue.
Airboats appear in three of four official Grassrivers screenshots, including one depicting a pursuit. Rockstar has confirmed no vehicle list.
One official screenshot shows the Vice City skyline on the horizon from a Grassrivers stilt house. That establishes proximity but not distance.
Alligators appear in an official screenshot. Nothing has been said about whether they are hostile.
Nothing about property ownership in GTA VI has been announced.
